Tips for Taking Care of your Badminton Court Mat

Proper care of badminton court mats is essential to maintain grip, player safety, and long life, especially in Indian playing conditions. Here’s a complete and practical guide you can follow for PVC / vinyl badminton court mats used in academies, clubs, and home courts.

1. Daily Cleaning (Most Important)

  • Dry mop or microfiber dust mop the court before and after play.
  • Remove dust, shuttle feathers, sand, and sweat residues.
  • Avoid using hard brooms as they can scratch the surface.

This alone can increase mat life by 30–40%.

2. Weekly Wet Cleaning

  • Use clean water or mild, pH-neutral floor cleaner.
  • Mop with a slightly damp microfiber mop (not dripping wet).
  • Immediately dry the surface after cleaning.

❌ Avoid:

  • Phenyl, acid, bleach, alcohol, or detergent powders
  • Excess water pooling (can weaken adhesive or joints)

3. Control Dust & Dirt Entry

  • Place dust control mats outside and inside court entry points.
  • Enforce non-marking shoes only.
  • No barefoot play, slippers, or outdoor footwear.

For academies: Keep separate indoor shoes for players.

4. Prevent Sweat & Moisture Damage

  • Wipe sweat patches immediately to avoid slippery spots.
  • Ensure proper ventilation or exhaust fans.
  • Use dehumidifiers in humid areas if possible.

5. Avoid Heavy Loads & Sharp Objects

  • Do not drag chairs, benches, or umpire tables.
  • Lift equipment instead of sliding.
  • Avoid sharp objects like tripods, metal stools, or trolleys.

6. Sunlight & Heat Protection

  • Avoid direct sunlight on mats (causes fading and hardening).
  • Maintain indoor temperature ideally between 18°C–30°C.
  • Do not place heaters directly on the court.

7. Proper Rolling & Storage (If Portable)

  • Roll mats with the playing surface outward.
  • Use a PVC pipe core while rolling.
  • Store in a dry, flat, shaded area.
  • Never fold mats—this causes permanent cracks.

8. Periodic Deep Cleaning (Every 3–6 Months)

  • Use a soft scrub pad or auto scrubber (low RPM).
  • Always test cleaner on a small corner first.
  • Follow manufacturer-recommended cleaning agents.

9. Inspect & Repair Early

  • Check joints, seams, and edges regularly.
  • Fix lifted edges immediately using approved adhesive.
  • Early repairs prevent complete mat replacement.

10. Educate Players & Staff

  • Display simple Do’s & Don’ts boards near the court.
  • Train cleaning staff on correct chemicals and methods.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
  • Using phenyl or floor disinfectants
  • Excessive water washing
  • Allowing outdoor shoes
  • Ignoring sweat patches
  • Dragging equipment
With proper care, a good-quality badminton court mat can last:
  • 5–7 years (academy use)

7–10 years (controlled club or private use)
